The kick-off meeting of the iBioGen project took place at the University of Cyprus (UCY) on the 13th and 14th of September 2018. Four researchers from NHM, CSIC and CNRS visited Cyprus and the UCY for first time. The consortium partners had the opportunity to jointly discuss the twinning agenda and efficiently coordinate the actions to be implemented.
Briefly, after a short introduction by the project coordinator, each partner presented their research groups, their relevant ongoing projects and their role in iBioGen. In the following sessions, the objectives and implementation of each of the Work Packages were discussed separately and the activities of the first year were specifically planned and organised. Furthermore, an extensive brainstorming was conducted on the following topics: (a) Field, lab and bioinformatics protocol unification among island systems (b) Synthesising island biodiversity theory for community-wide (site-based) genetic data (c) Developing teaching resources for biodiversity genomics (d) Establishment of a European island network of Genomic Observatories. The stimulating discussion and fruitful interactions among the four partners during the kick-off meeting consolidated the iBioGen team and was inspiring to all participants. Annual review meetings will be held at UCY in order to ensure efficient scientific coordination throughout the project.
