Brent's key research interests encompass the application of molecular genetic tools for the study of ecology and evolution, with a particular focus on invertebrate communities and oceanic island ecosystems. His recent research interests have extended to combining ecological and molecular sampling techniques for the analysis of ecological communities, and the utilization of high-throughput next generation sequencing for the measurement and characterization of biodiversity, and the genomic analysis of non-model species.

The research interest of Carmelo has been linked to the fields of taxonomy, evolutionary biology, phylogenetics and biogeography of beetles, and recently extended to the study of biodiversity patterns, and processes structuring such patterns, on soil arthropods in a broad scale.

Paula Arribas
|
Paula is a researcher interested in the study of the mechanisms involved in generating biodiversity and its distribution in space and time, and also in the use of all this knowledge with conservation purposes. To deal with these general topics she is currently developing and applying novel approaches using high-throughput next generation sequencing to measure and characterize arthropod biodiversity. Her research skills also encompass phylogenetics, ecophysiology and ecological modelling, applying multidisciplinary and integrated approaches mostly to beetle lineages.

The CSIC team will focus on the early parts of the chain of activities, using their significant expertise in plot-based biodiversity sampling for designing island biodiversity surveys and for rolling-out to other partners of the consortium and beyond. Team members comprise the Ecology and Evolution on Islands research group, based in the Canary Islands, with specific expertise in island biodiversity research and an extensive network of international collaborators. They also contribute broad theoretical background in the ecology and evolution of island organisms. The CSIC team members have a strong interest in the application of genomic techniques within standardised protocols for biodiversity analysis, and will therefore lead Work Package 3 on networking for protocol unification. Additionally, CSIC members will contribute their empirical and theoretical skills to Work Package 2 (teaching and mentoring), Work Package 4 (theoretical synthesis) and Work Package 5 (dissemination).
